July is peak summer in Nauvoo: hot and humid with average daytime highs around 85–87°F (29–31°C).

Expect lots of outdoor walking on grass, gravel paths, and historic sites, plus evening activities like the Nauvoo Pageant (outdoor shows in July).

Focus on light, breathable, modest clothing. Comfort and sun/heat protection are key — you’ll likely walk several miles daily. Avoid dark colors that absorb heat and opt for quick-dry fabrics.

MODESTY NOTE
Shoulders covered and bottoms at least knee-length for temple-related areas and many tours.

CLOTHING
For 3 days — light and quick-drying fabrics recommended

  • Tops: 4–5 lightweight, breathable options — short-sleeve shirts, polo shirts, or moisture-wicking tees (modest necklines and sleeve lengths)
  • Bottoms: 2–3 pairs of lightweight pants, capris, or modest knee-length skirts/shorts (skorts work well for coverage and comfort)
  • Outerwear: Light rain jacket or poncho (for sudden showers); optional light sweater for air-conditioned buildings or cooler evenings
  • Underwear & Socks: 4–5 pairs each (moisture-wicking socks to prevent blisters from walking in heat)
  • Sleepwear: 2 sets of lightweight, modest pajamas

SHOES

  • 1 pair of sturdy, broken-in walking shoes or sneakers with good breathability (essential — lots of uneven paths and grass)
  • 1 pair of comfortable sandals or slip-ons for evenings or indoor time (if feet need a break)

ACCESSORIES

  • Wide-brimmed hat or cap
  • Sunglasses
  • Belt

TOILETRIES & PERSONAL CARE

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss
  • Travel-size shampoo, conditioner, body wash (or use hotel-provided)
  • Deodorant (extra important in heat/humidity), razor, feminine hygiene products
  • Hairbrush/comb, any styling needs
  • High-SPF sunscreen (30+ or higher — strong sun exposure while outdoors all day)
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Insect repellent (DEET-based or strong formula for mosquitoes, which are prevalent especially after dark; also for daytime gnats and potential chiggers in grassy areas)
  • Medications: Prescriptions, pain relievers, antihistamines (for bug bites or allergies), any heat-related items like electrolyte packets
  • Hand sanitizer, wet wipes, tissues
  • Reusable water bottle (insulated if possible — stay hydrated; carry it everywhere)

ESSENTIALS & ELECTRONICS

  • ID/Wallet: License, cards, some cash (small shops and snacks)
  • Phone + charger + portable power bank
  • Temple recommend (if applicable)
  • Compact umbrella or rain poncho
  • Small daypack or backpack: To carry water, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, and essentials while touring
  • Camera or use phone for scenic river views and pageant photos

HEALTH & COMFORT ITEMS

  • Snacks: Energy bars, nuts, dried fruit, electrolyte packets (limited dining options — many visitors pack lunches for picnics in parks or between sites)
  • First-aid: Band-aids, blister pads (for hot-weather walking), antiseptic, anti-itch cream for bites
  • Small fan or cooling towel (optional but helpful in high humidity)
  • Sunglasses and hat for sun protection
